FAQ
If there are some questions of general interest that remain unanswered here, please contact us.
What is Jovise?
Jovise is math website for everybody who enjoys math and wants to learn some more.
What can the math tutor chatbot do for me?
The math tutor chatbot can help you learn math in an efficient way. The math tutor chatbot can explain you math terms and can give you related problems which become harder once you answered questions correctly. It can also be used as a calculator. You can try to have other discussions with it but it likes coming back to math related topics. While the chatbot uses artificial intelligence to try to understand your input, its language capabilities are clearly limited. Be patient when it gives a nonsensical answer to one of your questions, it is trying its very best!
How do I use the math tutor chatbot?
Just type in the question or topic you want to work on and the math chatbot will see if it can help you. If you are asked a question, write the answer in the text box and press submit.
How do I use the math chatbot as a calculator?
Type in the calculation you want to perform. Often the math tutor chatbot will give you not only the result but also shows you how to do the calculation. Use the symbol "*" for multiplication, ":" for division and "^" for a power. For example 6*5=30, 30:5=6 and 2^10=1024. The chatbot will also understand phrases like "calculate five plus six."
Can the calculator in the math chatbot handle fractions?
Yes: Two integers separated by a "/" will be interpreted as fractions. For example, 1/3+1/6 will calculate $\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{6}.$ 2/4 will reduce the fraction $\frac{2}{4}.$ 1/7 will show the decimal representation of $\frac{1}{7}.$
What other functions can the calculator in the math tutor chatbot handle?
$\sqrt{144}$ can be calculated as sqrt(144). Or you can simply ask for the "square root of 144". The cosine of 30 degrees is cos(30). Similarly you can use the other trigonometric functions sin(), tan(), cot(), arccos(), arcsin() and arctan(). You can convert radians into degrees by using the radians() function and degrees into radians by using the degrees() function. The factorial 5! can be calculated as factorial(5) and binom(4,2) computes the binomial coefficient $\binom{4}{2}.$ gcd() and lcm() calculate the greatest common divisor and the least common multiple of two numbers, for example gcd(8,12)=4 and lcm(8,12)=24. pi is interpreted as the constant $\pi$ and e as the constant $e.$ exp() is the natural exponential function and log() the natural logarithm, so exp(1) is about 2.71828 and log(exp(1))=1.
Can the math tutor chatbot do my homework?
The math tutor chatbot can assist you with your calculations and point you in the right direction but typically can not (and should not) do your homework for you.
Is there a specific order in which I should do the quizzes?
No, just try a variety and see what you like. If you finished a quiz, you can do it again and you will typically get different questions.
Do you have hints when I am struggling with a question?
Yes, for most questions we do. Just press on the key icon on top of the question. The question specific glossary often also includes hints for the right answer. You can access the glossary for a question by clicking on the book icon on top of the question. In a chatbot session you can also ask for a hint for any question or an explanation of a term that you do not understand.
Do you explain the right answers?
Yes, for most questions we do. To see the explanation, you will need to submit an answer. Then you will be shown the correct answer with a short explanation and sometimes a feedback on your answer. In the chatbot you can alternatively simply ask to see the solution.
Whats the difference between the quizzes in Grade and those in Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Calculus?
The Grade menu has non-adaptive quizzes organized by grade level. Questions shown here are randomly drawn from all questions at the respective grade levels. The other menus contain adaptive quizzes organized by topic. If you answer more questions correctly in an adaptive quiz, you will get harder questions next. Both types of quizzes try to avoid repeatedly showing questions that have been already answered correctly.
What are the quizzes in the Skill menu?
The quizzes in the Skill menu help practice and learn a specific skill. Most problems here are broken down into several small steps.
What about the quizzes on the main page of Jovise?
This will be a static collection of quizzes containing random questions from all elementary school and middle school topics. Typically, a new quiz is created every day. Click the "Previous" link to see more questions. If you like a certain type of question and want to see more questions like that, click on the check icon above the question. category in the Quiz link.
What are the five icons above each question?
The first three icons allow to access questions that have the same topic (more or less) to the current question but that are either easier, of similar difficulty or harder. The open book icon opens a glossary page that explains terms that are relevant to the current question. It often provides valuable hints about the right answer. The key icon allows to directly access a hint pertaining to the question. On the start page you will also find pencil icons that allow direct access to the solution of the problem below it.
Do the quizzes ever finish?
Yes. The adaptive quizzes finish if you have answered enough questions at the most difficult level in a given topic correctly. The quizzes vary in length depending on how much ground is being covered (for example the "Equations" quiz is longer than the "Negative numbers" quiz). The non-adaptive quizzes in the Grade section end if you answer 20 questions correctly. The feedback messages after you submit your answers will give you an idea about how much of the quiz you have completed. Note, that for adaptive quizzes the percentage of the quiz that has been completed can go down after you submitted wrong answers. The skill practicing quizzes on the Skill page will not finish.
Why do Grade x quizzes cover topics that we have not learnt in Grade x?
The division of topics in grade levels is somewhat arbitrary. Also there is some material in the quizzes that is not generally covered in typical school districts.
I want to learn addition and multiplication, what quizzes should I take?
Try the "Addition and subtraction facts" and "Addition and subtraction", "Multiplication and division facts" and "Multiplication and division" quizzes in the Arithmetic menue. You can also try the "Multi digit addition", "Multi digit subtraction", "Partial products multiplication" and "Lattice multiplication" quizzes in the Skill menu.
I saw that there are some chess questions too. What is the intended audience for those?
The chess questions are for beginning players who already know how to move the pieces. They ask for best moves in a particular situation but do not indicate (unless you press the hint icon) if this best move is a development move, a check mate, a combination, taking a hanging piece or avoiding a threat.
I think I have found an error in one of the question. What can I do to get it corrected?
